It\u2019s a life-shattering condition that can leave you feeling devoid of stamina, and vitality- the very things that societal conventions use to define you as a man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the embarrassment surrounding this tabooed subject, it\u2019s a condition that a significant number of men experience at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Cleveland Clinic, erectile dysfunction affects 52% of men, with it affecting 40% men aged 40, and 70% of men age 70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With so many men being affected by ED, what is the cause?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some factors can cause erectile dysfunction, recent research has revealed that there may be a link between erectile dysfunction and vitamin D deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-study\">The Study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study reviewed 3,390 men aged 20 years or older, free of any cardiovascular disease. The researchers measured semen levels and assessed self-reported<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/sexual-health\/stem-cell-treatment-erectile-dysfunction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Erectile dysfunction (opens in a new tab)\">Erectile dysfunction<\/a>, based on the question \u2018How would you describe your ability to get and keep an erection adequate for satisfactory intercourse?.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Men who answered \u201cnever\u201d or \u201csometimes able\u201d were considered to have ED. Investigators defined severe ED as never being able to get and keep an erection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers reported that those who reported experiencing ED had lower vitamin D levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study also revealed that those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3427191\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low levels of vitamin D<\/a> (defined as below 20ng\/mL), had a 30% greater risk of developing ED and an 80% risk of developing severe ED, compared to those who had optimal levels of vitamin D (defined as 30ng\/mL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, each 10ng\/mL decrease was associated with a 12% increased risk of developing ED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Michos., the founder of the study, has said<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur findings have potentially important clinical and public health implications for men,\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Erin D. Michos, MD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, and colleagues wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c25(OH)D is an easy biomarker to screen for through simple commercially-available laboratory tests, and deficiencies can be treated with supplementation and\/or modest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercoastalmedical.com\/2020\/04\/10\/symptoms-of-vitamin-d-deficiency-most-people-ignore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sunlight exposure<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-the-link\">What is the link?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be wondering how vitamin D levels can have such a drastic impact on your <a aria-label=\"sexual health (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/sexual-health\/low-sex-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexual health<\/a>? While this study was observational, the researchers established a clear link between low levels of this sunshine <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/sexual-health\/mens-sex-health-vitamins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vitamin<\/a> and an increased risk of ED.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason for this could be that when a man is sexually stimulated, neuronal nitric oxide is triggered. This has a soothing effect on the muscles, increasing the release of endothelial. If this process cannot occur, it is defined as erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s where vitamin D comes in. According to the study, vitamin D may help to regulate endothelially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/general-health\/endothelial-dysfunction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Endothelial dysfunction<\/a>, resulting in the inability of the smooth muscle cells lining the arterioles to relax, prevents vasodilatation (widening of blood vessels).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, penile erection depends on the relaxation of smooth muscle in the tissue surrounding the penis and the wall of small arteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers noted that men with ED have an increased prevalence of endothelial dysfunction, and vitamin D may <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/general-health\/how-to-reverse-endothelial-dysfunction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improve endothelial function<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne mechanism linking low vitamin D levels with ED may be via reduced synthesis of nitric oxide,\u201d they wrote. \u201cSecretion of <a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/article\/pmc\/pmc5035618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nitric oxide<\/a> is needed for relaxation of the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa and subsequently penile erection, and vitamin D may be a regulator of endothelial nitric oxide synthase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-increase-vitamin-d-levels\">How to increase Vitamin D levels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have erectile dysfunction boosting your vitamin D levels may help.
