{"id":16145,"date":"2019-08-26T09:23:13","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T09:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/?post_type=diabeteshealth&#038;p=16145"},"modified":"2026-05-30T08:12:57","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T08:12:57","slug":"beta-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/beta-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"Beta Cell Function in Diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that helps regulate how much energy your body receives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, for those with diabetes, their bodies cannot produce enough insulin to function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beta cells play an essential part in insulin production, working to produce, store, and release insulin when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article will take a closer look at the beta-cell function in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-are-beta-cells\"><strong>What are beta cells?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beta cells are a type of cell found in <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/021kyf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"pancreatic islets (opens in a new tab)\">pancreatic islets<\/a> that are essential for the production of the hormone, insulin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pancreas is a complex organ with different cell types capable of producing a number of hormones including insulin, <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/0vtgbl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"glucagon (opens in a new tab)\">glucagon<\/a>, pancreatic polypeptide, and somatostatin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In patients with type I or type 2 diabetes,beta-cell mass and function are destroyed, leading to insufficient insulin secretion and hyperglycemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-important-are-beta-cells-to-your-health\"><strong>How important are beta cells to your health?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A highly functional set of beta cells in your body is vital for overall health. Production of the right amount of insulin into the circulation, at the right time, is critical in blood sugar regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s all about balance. Excessive insulin production can lead to life-threatening <a aria-label=\"hypoglycemia (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/hypoglycemia-vs-hyperglycemia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hypoglycemia<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/what-does-low-blood-sugar-feel-like\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">low blood sugar<\/a>). Whereas inadequate amounts of insulin results in <a aria-label=\"hyperglycemia (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/hypoglycemia-vs-hyperglycemia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hyperglycemia<\/a> (high blood sugar).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If blood glucose levels become too high, this can result in increased insulin resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"beta-cells-and-type-1-diabetes\"><strong>Beta cells and type 1 diabetes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-does-type-1-diabetes-destroy-beta-cells\"><strong>How does type 1 diabetes destroy beta cells?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/type-1-diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Type 1 diabetes (opens in a new tab)\">Type 1 diabetes<\/a> is caused by immune destruction of beta cells leading to little or no insulin production. As a result, this can rapidly lead to extremely high glucose levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disorder; however, the general consensus is that the destruction of the beta cells is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences5.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concerning the autoimmune component, antibodies are made in the body against specific proteins in the beta cells. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Antibodies (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/wum3o2\" target=\"_blank\">Antibodies<\/a> are proteins that identify and neutralize foreign objects like bacteria and viruses. These antibodies do what normal antibodies do and attempt to destroy their target cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse is a good mouse model of type 1 diabetes. These mice have similar autoimmune-derived destruction of their beta cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another commonly employed model is to treat mice (or rats) with an antibiotic. This antibiotic is known to destroy beta cells when given at high enough concentrations. Both of these models have expanded our understanding of the pathology surrounding T1D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-happens-in-the-body-when-beta-cells-are-destroyed\">What happens in the body when beta cells are destroyed?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When beta cells are destroyed, blood glucose levels rise (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/hypoglycemia-vs-hyperglycemia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"hyperglycemia (opens in a new tab)\">hyperglycemia<\/a>). This is as there is no insulin to increase the uptake of glucose into cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be especially damaging to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/glaucoma\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"eyes (opens in a new tab)\">eyes<\/a>, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"kidney (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/diabetes-complications\/\" target=\"_blank\">kidney<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"nervous system (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/diabetic-neuropathy\/\" target=\"_blank\">nervous system<\/a>. Kidney failure with the need for dialysis and\/or transplantation is a common condition associated with type 1 diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-do-beta-cells-make-insulin\"><strong>How do beta cells make insulin?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beta cells are sensitive to many different factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glucose is the predominant regulator of <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/wsg1vq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"insulin production (opens in a new tab)\">insulin production<\/a>, although how this occurs are quite complicated. Here is a breakdown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once glucose enters the cell, it gets &#8220;detected&#8221; by several processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these is during the early steps of glycolysis (glucose metabolism for energy). <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/uwwl72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Glucokinase (opens in a new tab)\">Glucokinase<\/a>, an enzyme in glycolysis, has been shown to have a vital role in &#8220;detecting&#8221; the amount of glucose present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps if it is &#8220;over-worked&#8221; it sends out a distress signal, letting the cell know, glucose is in abundance, and it needs to produce more insulin7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The signaling result in an increased production of the <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/8sp3j3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"messenger RNA (opens in a new tab)\">messenger RNA<\/a> (mRNA) for insulin (from the DNA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The critical role of insulin in regulating blood glucose is well known. Less is understood about potentially important roles of the other half of the molecule, i.e., C-peptide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"C-peptide administration (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/6k9l1z\" target=\"_blank\">C-peptide administration<\/a> to persons with type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been shown to result in improvement in a number of complications including, kidney and nerve damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insulin secretion from the beta cell into the bloodstream, similar to insulin production, is stimulated by high glucose levels in the cell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"beta-cells-and-type-2-diabetes\"><strong>Beta cells and type 2 diabetes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-does-type-2-diabetes-destroy-beta-cells\"><strong>How does type 2 diabetes destroy beta cells?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/type-2-diabetes\/\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a> (T2D) has an entirely different underlying cause to Type 1 Diabetes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Type 2 Diabetes is usually caused by a combination of insulin resistance with regard to the uptake of glucose into cells and beta-cell dysfunction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With insulin resistance, the cells of the body don&#8217;t respond to insulin as well as they should.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of insulin resistance is a vicious cycle. High levels of insulin in the blood compound insulin resistance of the receptor, while they also enhance factors that lead to worsening resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/boost-insulin-sensitivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Insulin sensitivity (opens in a new tab)\">Insulin sensitivity<\/a> (the opposite of resistance) can be increased by losing weight. Weight loss (or intermittent fasting) may help in that it allows cells to &#8220;reset,&#8221; i.e., insulin sensitivity can be at least temporarily restored.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, beta cells begin to become over-loaded, i.e., exhaust, die, and drop out of the functioning population. As a result, they become non-functional and essentially are lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-do-you-increase-beta-cells-when-you-have-type-2-diabetes\"><strong>How do you increase beta cells when you have type 2 diabetes?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the development of therapies to restore, grow, or extend the capacity of beta cells in the pancreas, the best game plan is still to preserve the beta cells that you were born with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How is this achieved? One of the best methods is by maintaining a healthy weight and enjoying a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/diabetic-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"healthy diet (opens in a new tab)\">healthy diet<\/a>, low in sugars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have been diagnosed with T2D, it probably means that your beta cells are already suffering and in a high-stress situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-does-type-2-diabetes-affect-the-pancreas\"><strong>How does type 2 diabetes affect the pancreas?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/t1qhar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"high blood glucose levels (opens in a new tab)\">high blood glucose levels<\/a>, this elevated glucose enters the beta cells. The beta cells initially respond quite well by producing extra insulin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This results in a common condition associated with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"pre-diabetes (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/prediabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\">pre-diabetes<\/a> or obesity, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/type-2-diabetes\/expert-answers\/hyperinsulinemia\/faq-20058488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"hyperinsulinemia (opens in a new tab)\">hyperinsulinemia<\/a>. This is when excess levels of insulin circulating in the blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, this increase in blood insulin helps to reduce, and even normalize blood glucose levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is short-lived, and eventually, beta cells become &#8220;exhausted&#8221; 10 and begin to die. (apoptosis).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/2gczcy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Beta-cell dysfunction (opens in a new tab)\">Beta-cell dysfunction<\/a> is the process by which the beta cells begin to fail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inability of the beta cells of the pancreas to adapt to higher levels of glucose is considered to be a greater risk factor for the development of Type 2 diabetes, than tissue <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"insulin resistance (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/insulin-resistance-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">insulin resistance<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"advances-in-beta-cell-research\"><strong>Advances in beta cell research<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"can-beta-cells-be-replicated\"><strong>Can beta cells be replicated?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Novel approaches to preserve, restore, or transplant beta cells in T1D and T2D are currently being tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, inducing human beta cells to regenerate is difficult.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is currently only one class of drugs being developed that can induce human beta cells to replicate, i.e., <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/sj5evd\">the harmine analog class<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mechanism for this class of drugs is to inhibit the dual-specificity tyrosine-phosphorylation-regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A). DYRK1A is found in a number of different cell types in the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting, inhibition of this kinase also has been shown to &#8220;rescue&#8221; a mouse model of Down Syndrome. However, as of yet, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"DYRK1A inhibition  (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/95gkn4\" target=\"_blank\">DYRK1A inhibition <\/a>is not specific, reliable, and, thus, subject to off-target effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, a better understanding of how beta cells regenerate is needed. One approach is to look at the molecular changes that occur in <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/pchw0x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"insulinomas (opens in a new tab)\">insulinomas<\/a>. (a type of non-cancerous tumor (abnormal growth of cells) that produce unregulated amounts of insulin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If some of the changes that occur in the mass of cells could be harnessed or regulated in the <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/f58bk8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"islets of Langerhans (opens in a new tab)\">islets of Langerhans<\/a>, perhaps additional therapies to regenerate beta cells could be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"can-beta-cells-be-transplanted\"><strong>Can beta cells be transplanted?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Islet transplant has also been used experimentally to treat T1D. In <a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/rbj1cc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"islet transplantation (opens in a new tab)\">islet transplantation<\/a>, islets are taken from the pancreas of a deceased donor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The islets are infused into the liver where they become attached to existing, living cells, and hopefully, continue to live and manufacture insulin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Limitations of this approach include a limited number of available &#8220;donated&#8221; pancreas, due to the current inability to use living donors. Furthermore, there is limited survivability of transplanted cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option is to transplant beta cells from different species into humans. In 2006, Eventov-Friedman et al explored the possibility of transplanting pancreatic cells from a pig into a human.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"can-stem-cells-be-used-to-grow-new-beta-cells\"><strong>Can stem cells be used to grow new beta cells?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It was previously thought that you are born with the beta cells that you will have for life. However, new research suggests that you can &#8220;regenerate&#8221; beta cells by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"fasting (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bensnaturalhealth.com\/blog\/diabetes-health\/intermittent-fasting\/\" target=\"_blank\">fasting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An intriguing recent investigation in mice showed feeding a low-calorie diet for 4 days stimulated the generation of new beta cells similar to what has been observed in pancreatic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another novel approach is to generate insulin-producing cells from stem cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/ki8r3m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Stem cells (opens in a new tab)\">Stem cells<\/a> are &#8220;basic cells&#8221; that have the capability of developing (differentiating) into mature cells of almost any type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stem cells belong to four subclasses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) embryonic stem cells (ESCs)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3) non-embryonic adult stem cells<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4) cord blood and amniotic stem cells<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/ze72hg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Pluripotent stem cells (opens in a new tab)\">Pluripotent stem cells<\/a> can undergo self-renewal (form identical daughter cells) indefinitely. This represents an exciting possibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators at the University of California, San Francisco recently published a study describing the generation of mature beta cells from stem cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cells were tested in diabetic mice with highly positive findings. The results showed normalization of blood glucose even 8 months after transplantation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-the-possibility-of-developing-an-artificial-pancreas\"><strong>What is the possibility of developing an artificial pancreas?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Artificial pancreas (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/0trk1z\" target=\"_blank\">Artificial pancreas<\/a> is a promising new strategy to control blood glucose levels without active beta cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would use continuous glucose monitoring and an algorithm to determine how much insulin to produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of them are still in an active testing phase; but, a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"hybrid closed-loop system (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/snip.ly\/1auxj0\" target=\"_blank\">hybrid closed-loop system<\/a> is on the market. However, it does require the patient to administer some insulin manually, especially after meals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further refinement of these devices is expected in the next decade. Artificial pancreases are currently limited. This is due to the &#8220;lag-time&#8221; between increases in blood glucose and insulin release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The natural beta-cell\/pancreas is still more efficient in determining the necessary insulin to produce and secrete on time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that helps regulate how much energy your body receives.
