cancer tumors, helps indicate their aggressiveness.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nA high Gleason score indicates a greater risk of your prostate cancer spreading to other organs, bones, or lymph nodes.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nIf prostate cancer spreads to nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/prostate-cancer-stages\/\" a prostate biopsy, they examine your prostate cells under a microscope. These patterns show how quickly and aggressively they are growing.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThe lab will choose the two most commonly appearing patterns and give you a score. The score might look something like this 3+4 = 7.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThe first number indicates the most common pattern in all the samples. This is called<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4951968\/#:~:text=Metastatic%20spinal%20cord%20compression%20(MSCC,whom%20the%20incidence%20is%2019%25.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> metastatic spinal cord compression<\/a> (MSCC) and can lead to nerve damage in the spinal cord.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThese nerves are responsible for sending signals to the brain (1), allowing for movement and sensations.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nOne of the consequences of cancer cells pressing on the spinal cord can be the sensation of severe and prolonged back pain (2). Severe back pain is experienced in 95% of patients with MSCC (3).\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:spacer {\"height\":\"20px\"} -->\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<!-- \/wp:spacer -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading -->\n<h2 id=\"h-treatment-for-metastatic-cancer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatment for metastatic cancer<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/robotic-prostatectomy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Radical prostatectomy (opens in a new tab)\">Radical prostatectomy<\/a> and radiation therapy are generally used to treat localized prostate cancer. However, for patients that eventually develop locally advanced or metastatic cancer, hormone or radiation therapy may be required.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nHormone therapy is used to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nIn some cases, hormone therapy may lead to the development of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), typically within three years of treatment, although its effectiveness can vary from patient to patient.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:spacer {\"height\":\"20px\"} -->\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<!-- \/wp:spacer -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 id=\"h-radiotherapy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Radiotherapy<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/stage-3-prostate-cancer\/\">Radiotherapy<\/a> is widely used for treating bone metastases at all sites, including the spine, and will be effective for up to 12 months. Sometimes radiotherapy is used to prevent MCSS (4).\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nHowever, there is a lack of evidence to show that radiotherapy is effective at preventing MCSS. Some of the side effects are tiredness, diarrhea, and sometimes pain may worsen for the next couple of days.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:spacer {\"height\":\"20px\"} -->\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<!-- \/wp:spacer -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 id=\"h-surgery\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surgery<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nSurgery is only suitable for a limited number of patients with MCSS. The goal of surgery is to remove as much of the tumor as possible without weakening the spine. This takes the pressure of the spinal cord (4).\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nIf you have advanced prostate cancer or are taking hormone therapy, your provider may suggest calcium or <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/general-health\/vitamin-d-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Vitamin D (opens in a new tab)\">Vitamin D<\/a> for your bones.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nRadiotherapy may be given alongside surgery if the tumor cannot be removed entirely.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nOne study found that MCSS patients were more likely able to walk after undergoing surgery combined with radiotherapy, compared to patients that only underwent only radiotherapy (5). Drugs are regularly used to manage pain in cancer.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThe severity of pain will determine the type of drugs that are used. For mild pain, non-opioid drugs are recommended because they are fewer side effects (6).\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nParacetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly recommended.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nHowever, they should not be used for longer than 5 weeks (6). These drugs become loss effective long-term, and several side effects can occur with long-term use.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThis includes:\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n \t<li>stomach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n \t<li>ulcers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n \t<li>headaches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bensnaturalhealth.com\/diabetes-health\/hypertension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"high blood pressure (opens in a new tab)\">high blood pressure<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n \t<li>liver issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:list -->\n<ul>\n \t<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><!-- wp:list-item -->\n \t<li>blood-thinning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item -->\n\n<!-- \/wp:list -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nFor moderate pain, mild opioids such as codeine and tramadol. There is no conclusive evidence to suggest that weak opioids are very effective at reducing moderate pain (6).\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nFor severe pain, it is recommended that strong opioids are prescribed. This includes morphine and methadone.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nFrequent and or high dosages of strong opioids long-term are toxic to the body. This toxicity can cause changes in cardiac rhythm and respiratory distress (6).\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nCorticosteroids are regularly administered to patients with MSCC because it is thought that they decrease the bulk of the tumor or swelling of the spinal cord (7).\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nHowever, there is a lack of randomized control trials that display the efficacy of corticosteroids.
