The Middle East &amp; North Africa region may see close to 100 million by 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1.3 Billion by 2050:<\/strong> The Lancet study in 2023 grabs attention with <strong>1.3 billion by 2050<\/strong>\u200b if effective measures are not implemented. That equates to roughly 1 in 8 people on the planet having diabetes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Demographic Shift:<\/strong> By 2045, a greater proportion of diabetics will be in urban areas (as is already the case) and in the 65+ age group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-us-predictions-for-type-2-diabetes\"><strong>US Predictions for Type 2 Diabetes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prevalence by 2030:<\/strong> Various estimates put the U.S. diabetes prevalence around <strong>15% of the population by 2030<\/strong> (up from ~11% today). In absolute terms, possibly <strong>50\u201355 million Americans<\/strong> with diabetes by 2030. The CDC hasn\u2019t officially published a 2030 number, but given 1.2 million new diagnoses per year currently\u200b, a rough addition of 10\u201315 million in the next decade seems plausible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Youth Surge:<\/strong> By 2030, we might also see more youth with type 2. A NIH modeling study predicted that the number of youths with type 2 could increase almost 4-fold by 2050 (from 28,000 in 2010 to ~130,000 in 2050).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2050 Outlook:<\/strong> The famous CDC analysis in 2010 gave a range of scenarios, with the worst case being <strong>33% of U.S. adults with diabetes in 2050<\/strong>\u200b. Even a middle-ground scenario had about 25% by 2050\u200b. So somewhere between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 adults.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prediabetes Conversion:<\/strong> The fate of the ~96 million Americans with prediabetes will heavily shape future numbers. There\u2019s a concerted effort (National DPP programs, etc.) to reduce progression. If those efforts are modestly successful, maybe \u201conly\u201d a third will progress instead of half. But even that means millions of new cases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>State Variations:<\/strong> Some states (especially in the South) could see extremely high diabetes rates. For instance, states like Mississippi and West Virginia have adult diabetes rates around 15%. By 2030, those might exceed 20%. In contrast, some states in the West or Northeast might remain around 10-12%.
