5 Tips For Traveling With Ozempic On A Plane (Semaglutide)

When traveling with Ozempic, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure its safety and efficacy during your trip.

If you are unsure of how to prepare to take Ozempic on a plane, then this article is for you.

We offer valuable information on how to travel with Ozempic, including tips to ensure you don’t miss a dose and how to store the injectable pens during air travel.

How to travel with an Ozempic pen

To ensure that Ozempic remains effective and avoids any problems when you travel, you need to follow certain safety precautions:

1) Pack Ozempic in a different liquid bag

Because of their liquid content, it is necessary to place the pens in a plastic bag. The airport security may want to scan the pens separately.

So, keep them apart from your other liquids in a separate bag to make the screening process quicker.

2) Leave the pens in their original packages

It is advisable to travel with Ozempic pens in their original packaging with easily readable labels. That way, airport security can promptly recognize the medication.

Also, take along a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor to make things easier.

3) Put it in your carry-on bag

Ozempic is sensitive to light and extreme temperatures. Never leave it in your checked luggage.

The luggage storage areas of commercial planes are not always well insulated, so their temperatures can fluctuate, and the medication may spoil.

Packing the injectable pens in your carry-on bag is the best option. That way, the drug is easily accessible to you.

4) Carry a small medical cooling device with you

If you’ve traveled with insulin before, you’re probably familiar with this. Insulin travel cases often have multiple compartments that you can use to keep your Ozempic pens and needles apart.

The device will also help keep your medication cool and protected from the sun.

5) Always carry a small extra amount

Taking at least twice as much medication as you will need for the trip is another recommendation.

This way, you will have enough medication in case something unexpected happens, e.g., your return flight gets canceled.

How to keep Semaglutide cold while traveling

Before being used for the first time, the injectable Ozempic pens should be kept in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F ( 2°C and 8°C).

The device can then be stored at room temperature – between 59ºF and 86ºF (15ºC and 30ºC) – for up to 56 days following the first use.

Ozempic should not be exposed to temperatures above 86F° (30C°). It also should not be frozen because it becomes unusable once it gets to that state.

Here are some tips to make sure you are storing Semaglutide at the right temperature while traveling:

  • Look for a fridge as soon as you get to your destination to store unopened pens.
  • Avoid putting Ozempic pens in the freezer compartment to prevent freezing.
  • You can get a portable medical cooling device in case you don’t have access to a refrigerator.
  • If you’re traveling to a place with warmer climates, you need to keep the medication cool. In this case, you can store the pens in a fridge or cooling device even after the initial use.

Can you bring Ozempic on a plane?

Yes, Ozempic pens can be taken on a plane.  As long as they are screened independently from other items, liquid, gel, and aerosol medications are permitted in carry-on bags.

It is important that you notify the airport security officer about your medication during the security check process, as well as any necessary supplies like syringes.

It is advisable to get to the airport earlier than usual when carrying Ozempic so that you have enough time for the screening process.

If you are traveling abroad, you should consult with the local authorities about their airport policies in advance.

Some airports may require you to show a letter from your healthcare provider or your prescription.

Ozempic is widely used, and you shouldn’t face any issues when traveling internationally with it. But it’s always safer to confirm in advance.

What is the half-life of Ozempic dose?

Ozempic has a half-life of approximately one week, which is why it is injected once weekly.

A medication’s half-life is how long it takes for half of its dosage to be cleared from your body.

How long does Semaglutide stay in your system?

It may take up to five weeks for the maximum dosage of Ozempic (1 mg) to leave your system completely, whereas the maximum dose of Wegovy (2.4 mg) may take up to seven weeks.

Many variables, such as your age, metabolism, and the drug’s dosage, affect how long a drug remains in your system.

Can you skip your Ozempic dosage while on holiday?

It is not advisable to intentionally skip a dose when on vacation.

The drug is prescribed once a week to ensure that it remains at a steady state in your body for maximum effect.

You cannot predict how your body will react when you skip a dose. So, don’t stop taking it.

Just make sure you follow the tips above to store Ozempic properly during your trip.

What happens if you skip your Semaglutide dose?

Side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur in patients starting to take injectable GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic and Wegovy. Once the patient adjusts to the medication, these side effects often go away with time.

But if a patient stops taking their medication for a while and then resumes, there’s a chance that the original side effects will recur.

This is especially true for those who experienced serious negative effects when taking the drug for the first time.

Your blood sugar control may also be affected if you skip doses of Ozempic. In addition, you may notice that you’re not losing weight as expected.

If things get busy during your trip, you may genuinely forget to take your shot. In that case, if you remember within five days of when you were supposed to take it, you can inject the missed dose and continue with your usual schedule.

If you remember more than five days later, skip that dose and take the next dose in accordance with your usual schedule.

Refilling Ozempic while on vacation

One of the horrors you could face while on vacation is realizing your Ozempic pen is empty. The simplest way to avoid this is to get your Ozempic prescription filled before you leave.

If it is too early for you to get a refill before your trip, you will need to ask for something called a vacation override. It allows you to get your prescription filled earlier than usual.

Be sure to do this several days before your trip because it can take longer than the usual refill.

Your pharmacy would have to get in touch with your insurance provider so that they can process the override.

If you must get a refill while on a trip, there are different options based on where you are:

Domestic travel

If you’re vacationing within the States, getting a refill is a bit easier. You just need to find a local pharmacy that is linked with your insurance provider.

You can then contact your home pharmacy and ask them to transfer your prescription to the local pharmacy.

If you’re having issues, contact your healthcare provider and ask for their help.

International travel

If you travel out of the country and you need an Ozempic refill, you’ll need to contact the healthcare provider who gives you your prescriptions.

They’ll need to write a new prescription that you can take to a local pharmacy.

If you are not able to reach your healthcare provider, you may need to find a local healthcare provider and get a prescription from them.

Remember that drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy may not be available in some countries. So, if you’re planning an international trip, it is best to get a refill before you leave.
